What counteracts hygge
To create hygge, you have to know what COUNTERACTS hygge.
Here are some advice:
•
Stop being constantly on the move
People who are rushing and have to be at the next place soon, people who does not
take their coat off because they soon have to move on or people who looks like they
have a better place to be, are “enemies” of hygge.
•
Stop acting busy all the time
People who are more occupied with their phone than your conversation, who listen
with just “half an ear” and are constantly looking elsewhere are also “enemies” of
hygge.
•
Be genuine and real, not a fake person.
We have a term called hyggelig in Norwegian. It means more than nice, more solid
and genuin. People who put on different faces in diferent settings are not “hygge
material”. If you just act nice and interested, most people will eventually see through
you and you will not be invited next time.
•
Hygge is the opposite of competition
In a hygge setting, no one has to be best or to win something. There is no room for
anyone to be better than others, which means no bragging or dominant persons.
•
Stay away from the clichés about Scandinavian countries to sell the concept of hygge,
like fake snow, elves, cuddles, but also blankets, candles, cushins and other interior
stuff etc. Yes they are nice things to have, but does not necessary create hygge by
themselves. Further a lot of glossy and quite stupid images are sold: The need for a
new carpet and matching candles, the use of a bicycle instead of a car (yes,
Copenhagen is flat, the rest of Scandinavia is not …), the need for underfloor heating,
etc. This has nothing to do with hygge.
•
Don’t make hygge annoying and too sweet, don’t use stereotype Scandinavian
images or settings. It is important to create the real mood and not a “Disney” version
•
Don’t raise controversial issues. This is not the day or time for hard discussions there
some of the guests gets angry, insulted or offended.
•
You can’t create hygge by using self-help books and other quackery. The right means
are things like enough time, the ability to relax, a safe environment and so on
•
